Born in Tehran, Iran, Shirana Shahbazi studied photography at the at the Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst in Zurich. As a visual artist working in the medium of photography, she has always sought to explore the boundaries and limits of the medium. Most of her initial work was created by travelling, and this was followed by a sustained period of studio-based activity. She has not only worked in various genres of photography, but also produced with a highly diverse technical register, several large-scale installations. Photography and artist books play an important role in her aesthetic formation and practice. Together with Manuel Krebs, a graphic designer, typographer and art book expert, Shirana has published a number of monographs and books.
