Giulia Essyad is an artist, poet, and performer. Her practice is characterized by performativity and affect. Her work usually includes photography, video, language, and performances. Essyad’s practice concerns the representation of bodies, online and IRL, and engages with the varied forms of alienation that accompany the consumption and production of body images. In 2018 (ongoing) she initiated the cycle of works “Blue Period.” The project uses the color blue as a focal point and signifier for otherness and artificiality. The works include videos, installations, performances, sculptures, texts and music.
Giulia will be on residency at 1Shanthiroad
“In Bengaluru and around the south of India, I intend to soak up old and new ideas about the body, its workings, its representation, and the ways it connects us to the divine, as well as to technology,” says Giulia, “I will be laying the groundwork for a new chapter in my practice, one engaging more directly with sexuality and mysticism. My tools are a notebook, a camera and my old PC. As usual I will be deconstructing bodily representations, in an effort to understand how we understand ourselves and each other.”
